Many intraocular lenses use the concept of extended depth of focus—employing a continuous, elongated focal zone—to help patients with presbyopia achieve clearer vision across distances. For presbyopes seeking a nonsurgical solution, the US FDA just approved the first single-vision, daily disposable contact lens featuring an EDOF design. The hydrophilic lens, marketed as “Deseyne,” has been used in Europe for more than a decade under a different name, according to its developer, Bruno Vision Care LLC. The lens is made with a material called vifilcon C hydrogel, which is enhanced with several ingredients to support sustained hydration, such as natural co-polymers, hyaluronic acid and tamarind seed polysaccharide. The company says Deseyne has a good safety profile; no lens-related adverse events were reported in Bruno’s clinical study. With its single, spherical optical zone, Deseyne may be a good fit for presbyopia patients who experience common challenges associated with multifocal contact lenses, such as reduced contrast sensitivity, ghosting or prolonged adaptation, the company suggests. For more information, go to www.brunovisioncare.com.
