NBEO Shares Continued Concerns Over Optometric Licensing Measures in Kentucky, Citing ‘Gaps in Public Protection’
Published on February 11, 2026
NEWARK, N.J.—Controversy continues within the Kentucky optometric community following ongoing concerns after 21 optometrists in the state received licenses between 2020-2023 without passing all required parts of the National Board of Examiners in Optometry (NBEO) three-part exam. The dispute has its roots in pandemic-era adjustments the Kentucky Board of Optometric Examiners (KBOE) made to reduce travel and in-person testing at the time, when the board accepted alternative clinical competency evaluations and later permitted substitutes for NBEO components. Tensions have continued to rise to the surface over the past several months, with the NBEO and KBOE sparring over proposed remediation steps.
