CHICAGO—Prevent Blindness, a nonprofit eye health organization, has declared June Cataract Month. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, cataracts are the leading cause of blindness worldwide and the leading cause of vision loss in the United States, Prevent Blindness said in an announcement. An estimated 20.5 million Americans age 40 and older have cataracts in one or both eyes. A cataract is a clouding of the eye’s clear lens that affects vision. Most cataracts develop slowly but eventually impair sight.
