LOS ANGELES— Barbara McReynolds, co-founder/designer of l.a.Eyeworks, passed away here on May 18. She was 78. l.a.Eyeworks, co-founded by McReynolds and Gai Gherardi, has long been known as a groundbreaking optical venture, forging an influential design vernacular and pioneering expansive marketing concepts. Determined to “change the conversation about eyewear,” McReynolds and Gherardi, high school friends-turned-licensed opticians, opened an optical boutique on Melrose Avenue in 1979, presenting hand-modified, archetypal vintage frames in a revolutionary unisex, gallery-like setting.
