NEWARK, N.J.—After weathering a storm of uncertainty over the past several months, the optical industry, along with others in the U.S., is now faced with the certainty of across-the-board tariffs on products imported from most corners of the world. Sweeping penalties against imports from key trading partners were announced on Thursday, and will range from approximately 10 to 40 percent, according to major news outlets. Scheduled to take effect for most countries on August 7, most imports from the European Union would now be subjected to a 15 percent penalty, while Japan will now see U.S. imports taxed at a 15 percent rate.
