Eyes on the Future: New Optometry Schools Open in the U.S.

For decades, optometry education in the U.S. has been anchored by a trove of venerated programs, advanced clinics, state-of-the-art labs and decades of alumni networks. But the aging population of Baby Boomers continues to grow, joined by rising rates of myopia and increased incidence of dry eye and diabetic eye disease, placing growing demands on optometry practices and driving the need for more doctors. In 2010, there were just 20 accredited professional optometric degree programs in the U.S.; by this fall there will be 25. A new wave of expansion in optometric education is underway, and as academia works to meet increased demand, the rapid growth prompts curiosity. What hurdles must universities clear to train the next generation of eyecare providers?
